I took a community ed photography class in 2007 and our instructor told the story of a fellow photographer who devised an experiment in perspective: he would randomly throw a hula hoop out into his yard and spend the rest of his time taking pictures of whatever was inside it. I imagined him on his knees in the grass and the weeds, gazing into the world within his plastic ring. Insects, dandelions, dirt. An ecosystem.
Our lives are just like the hula hoop: finite and boundaried. And we spend so little time marveling at what’s within them. Being wide-eyed at the lives we’ve created and lessons we’ve learned. The people who have affected us and who we have impacted.
Take some time today to view your life through your hula hoop. Sit in awesome wonder of the beauty within.
