Experience is what let’s you know you made a mistake the second time you make it. How many times are you willing to make a mistake over and over again?
Something that has helped me is to write a letter to myself. Perhaps I have an experience that I don’t want to forget: I succumb to fear, experience shame, or give in to temptation (sweets around the holidays…hurts so good…). After I come out the other side of the experience and I’ve determined that it’s one that I don’t want to forget, I’ll write myself a letter describing what happened, how I was feeling before, how I am feeling now, and what I want myself to truly remember about the experience.
Your career will inevitably experience ups and downs. How you are with those ups and downs – the amount of reflection and attention that you put in to them, and what you do afterward – will give you not only peace but allow you to be more effective and happier doing your work.
