You might not be the right person.
It could be that the universe just doesn’t think you are the one. So you don’t get the promotion or the job or the board seat or win the election. And it hurts. Ugh, does it hurt. And it sure calls your raison d’être in to question: “do I have what it takes? Am I wasting my time?”
But, if you think about it, who is the right person? Who does the higher power choose to make a success or not? Why does someone toil all of her life for achievement and another – barely lifting a finger – experiences it as if he were destined for it? It’s a question that can’t be answered, honestly. More importantly, however, it’s a question that isn’t worth the time considering. Because when you’re spending your time mulling over a question like that, you’re making it about yourself and not about the work.
The work – whether you get the nod or the award or the pat on the back – is always there. It never ends.
And the work is why you are in it for the first place. The love of the challenge. Growing your capabilities and your sophistication. Using it as a medium or platform to branch out in exciting ways. It’s from this place that you put something out into the world that is genuine, honest, and authentic. And it doesn’t matter what comes back: the simple act of producing is what’s worthwhile.
Manifest your own higher power and create an extraordinary career. Make it about the work.
